07 Jun Península de Papagayo: Mucho más allá de ser el getaway ideal para estrellas de Hollywood

Uno de los mejores sitios vacacionales del mundo para experimentar verdadera decadencia. Así se construyó el concepto Papagayo y esto es lo que necesita para crecer todavía más.

Las noches en Papagayo son insondables. A pesar del decorado de sus hoteles y el ruido que nace del choque de inglés y español, sus noches tienen un encanto particular. Para los lugareños, son las curvas del golfo que le confieren esa profundidad, que ni el desarrollo turístico ha podido disminuir.

Y es que las 566 hectáreas del golfo, al norte de Guanacaste, es donde va el lujo a descansar. Entre el bosque seco tropical, que es un gran espacio verde, pululan las entradas imponentes, los árboles que parecen sedientos y los autos llenos de viajeros con bronceados que hablan de invierno, ansiosos por descubrir por qué Papagayo es uno de los destinos más cotizados.

Cómo el golfo y el lujo se casaron

Todo empezó cuando el Banco Centroamericano de Integración Económica (BCIE) tuvo la inquietud de promover el desarrollo del turismo en Centroamérica en 1965, se establecieron polos turísticos, zonas que poseen características especiales que con solo un empujón pueden ser cunas del urbanismo y la inversión; una de ellas es el Polo Turístico Golfo de Papagayo.

Es por ello que no es de sorprender que a partir de 1970 el Golfo de Papayo se comenzara a posicionar- a nivel nacional e internacional- como el sitio perfecto para las personas que buscan belleza extrema sin importar el precio. El golfo es un punto de encuentro, entre los hoteles y proyectos inmobiliarios de primer nivel y a naturaleza que salvaje, no se deja impresionar por los altos muros y recuerda, con cierta arrogancia, las razones por las cuáles esto es un paraíso terrenal.

Pero, ¿cuál ha sido su secreto? Para algunos la estrategia que nació hace mucho. “Es el único destino turístico que cuenta con un desarrollo estratégico por más de cuatro décadas y un marco jurídico que lo sustenta, en el que solo se permite el desarrollo de 20 habitaciones por hectárea y un máximo de 14 metros de altura en las edificaciones”, dice Javier Pacheco, vicepresidente de la Cámara Nacional de Turismo.

Esto ha permitido la llegada de grandes compañías, dueñas de la mayoría de las esas habitaciones y – aunque las costas en el país son públicas-, explotan sus playas paradisíacas. Hoteles de 4 y 5 estrellas que derrochan elegancia, como, precisamente, el Four Seasons, El Mangroove y Andaz Papagayo son testigos del crecimiento.

En ellos, las raíces precolombinas, el uso de materiales locales y los aires playeros son fuente de inspiración, en una búsqueda por reinterpretar de “manera contemporánea la riqueza del sitio y que responda a la historia y la cultura que la ha caracterizado”, dice Ronald Zurcher, presidente de la firma Zurcher Arquitectos, que tiene una influencia enorme en la urbanización de la zona.

Cada una de las edificaciones de lujo de Papagayo siguen estas líneas de diseño que “fueron creadas para preservar y proteger el ambiente natural, promover diseños en armonía con la tierra y realzar la integridad estética de la Península”, explica Manuel Ardón, director de Operaciones de Ecodesarrollo Papagayo, que incluye hoteles como Marina Papagayo y Prieta Beach Club.

Para nadie es un secreto que mucho se ha hablado del impacto en la naturaleza y las repercusiones que ha tenido la construcción en la zona; sin embargo, Zurcher destaca que “el impacto tanto en la naturaleza, como en la población ha sido positivo, sin lugar a duda. En cuanto a la naturaleza, con la llegada del desarrollo, se ha creado una mayor conciencia de protección de los bosques y medidas de mitigación para evitar la erosión en las construcciones nuevas”.

¿Y el futuro para Papagayo?

Como sus noches de luna nueva, el futuro de Papagayo es también un canva en blanco, que espera por una obra de arte.

A pesar del crecimiento, el golfo podría brillar más, crecer más fuerte y volar más alto. “Ha habido una falta de una política de estado en términos de turismo que ha detenido su crecimiento. Papagayo es una de las grandes oportunidades que tiene Costa Rica, solo hay que explotarla”, explica Rubén Pacheco, presidente de la junta directiva de Enjoy Group.

En medio de sus imponentes hoteles, sus salvajes bosques y sus costas, Pagagayo ha encontrado espacios vacíos, como el agua, que ha sido siempre una mancha en el historial y que hasta hace poco fue solucionada con la apertura de su propio acueducto.

“Hubo un desarrollo importante antes del 2009 y a partir de ese año el ritmo de desarrollo disminuyó sustancialmente, aunque si se hicieron varios proyectos en la zona. Ahora estamos experimentando un repunte en el planeamiento de desarrollos turísticos con varios hoteles y sus componentes residenciales”, dice Zurcher. Para él, Papagayo está destinado a ser un destino turístico de primer mundo, con sistemas de taxi de agua que conecten los diferentes puntos turísticos del golfo y un gran nivel tecnológico y de conectividad, siempre pensando en el golfo como el concepto absoluto de lujo, belleza y equilibrio.

One of the best places in the world to experience a true decline. This is how the Papagayo concept was built and this is what it needs to grow even more.

The nights in Papagayo are unfathomable. Despite the decor of their hotels and the noise that comes from the shock of English and Spanish, their nights have a particular charm. For the locals, it is the curves of the gulf that give it that depth, which even tourist development has not been able to reduce.

In the 566 hectares of the gulf, north of Guanacaste, is where luxury goes to rest. Among the tropical dry forest, which is a large green space, the imposing entrances swarm and the thirsty trees and the cars full of tanned travelers who talk about winter, eager to discover why Papagayo is one of the most sought after destinations.

How the gulf and luxury got married

It all started when the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (BCIE) had the concern to promote the development of tourism in Central America in 1965, tourist poles were established, areas that have special characteristics that can be cradles of urbanism and investment with just a push; one of them is the Golfo de Papagayo Tourist Pole.

That is why it is not surprising that from 1970 the Gulf of Papayo began to position itself – nationally and internationally – as the perfect place for people who seek extreme beauty regardless of the price. The gulf is a meeting point between hotels and real estate projects of the first level and nature that wild, is not impressed by the high walls and recalls, with some arrogance, the reasons why this is an earthly paradise.

What has been its secret? For some, the strategy that was born long ago. “It is the only tourist destination that has a strategic development for more than four decades and a legal framework that supports it, which only allows the development of 20 rooms per hectare and a maximum of 14 meters in height in buildings”, says Javier Pacheco, vice president of the National Chamber of Tourism.

This has allowed the arrival of large companies, owners of most of those rooms and – although the coasts in the country are public – they exploit their paradisiacal beaches. Hotels of 4 and 5 stars that exude elegance, such as the Four Seasons, The Mangroove and Andaz Papagayo are witnesses of the growth.

In them, the pre-Columbian roots, the use of local materials and the beach airs are a source of inspiration, in a search to reinterpret in a contemporary way the richness of the site and that responds to the history and culture that has characterized it”, says Ronald Zurcher, president of the Zurcher Arquitectos firm, which has a huge influence on the urbanization of the area.

Each of Papagayo’s luxury buildings follows these lines of design that “were created to preserve and protect the natural environment, promote designs in harmony with the land and enhance the aesthetic integrity of the Peninsula”, explains Manuel Ardón, Operations Director of Ecodesarrollo Papagayo, which includes hotels such as Marina Papagayo and Prieta Beach Club.

It is no secret to anyone that much has been said about the impact on nature and the repercussions that construction has had on the area; However, Zurcher points out that “the impact on both nature and the population has been positive, without a doubt. In terms of nature, with the arrival of development, a greater awareness of forest protection and mitigation measures has been created to avoid erosion in new constructions”.

And the future for Papagayo?

Like its new moon nights, the future of Papagayo is also a blank canva, waiting for a work of art.

Despite the growth, the gulf could shine more, grow stronger and fly higher. “There has been a lack of a state policy in terms of tourism that has halted its growth. Papagayo is one of the great opportunities that Costa Rica has, you just have to exploit it”, explains Rubén Pacheco, chairman of the board of directors of Enjoy Group.

Amidst its imposing hotels, its wild forests and its coasts, Pagagayo has found empty spaces, such as water, which has always been a stain on the history and that until recently was solved with the opening of its own aqueduct.
“There was an important development before 2009 and from that year the pace of development decreased substantially, although there were several projects in the area. Now we are experiencing a rebound in the planning of tourism developments with several hotels and their residential components”, says Zurcher.

For him, Papagayo is destined to be a tourist destination of the first world, with water taxi systems that connect the different tourist points of the gulf and a high level of technology and connectivity, always thinking of the gulf as the absolute concept of luxury, beauty and balance.
